Partner Visa

Types

There are nine types of partner visas - that is visas where eligibility depends on an applicant for a partner visa being in a loving relationship with an Australian citizen. Partner visas cover engaged couples, formally married applicants, defactos or interdependent partner visa relationship partner visas are part of the family stream of migration.

Family

Some family members of an applicant for a partner visa may make a combined application. Such members are secondary applicants.

A partner visa can only be granted if the primary applicant for a partner visa ie the partner of an Australian sponsor is granted the partner visa. All partner visa applicants must satisfy health requirements for partner visas. The primary applicant for a partner visa and all members of their family must also satisfy the character requirements for a partner visa. This requires all applicants to obtain police clearances from Australia and overseas countries where partner visa applicants have resided for at least twelve months in the ten years immediately preceding the partner visa application.

Once an application is lodged and the partner visa applicant is already in Australia, they will be granted a bridging visa which comes into effect upon the expiry of an existing substantive visa.

A sponsor of a partner visa applicant must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
